I’m going to start off this blog by making a confession: I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to my lighting. I often go to big shows and festivals, look at their lighting and think to myself “Oooo…I wanna be able to do that!”
That’s where I get my influences from – I love taking the concepts I see at clubs, festivals and theatres, working out how I can introduce those effects to my setup, and give my clients and their guests that ‘WOW!’ factor each and every week. I’ve been a DJ now for nearly 18 years and over that time, I have evolved everything that I do to keep well ahead of what you would get from a typical ‘mobile disco’, and that includes the lightshow!
A bit of a tangent here but typing this up did bring back a memory that made me chuckle: a few years ago, I invested in some new lighting which annoyed Mrs. Benny tremendously because when she came home from work, the living room was filled with empty boxes and polystyrene. Kelly was even less pleased when she came home the next day to see that I had re-arranged the living room, set up the trussing and put those lights up so I can programme them into my computer. If I’m honest, I don’t think the smoke machine helped the situation either. Whoops!
Back to today, the lighting has continued to evolve and I have options to cover everything from smaller, intimate venues to vast halls. I often get asked the question about how my lightshow looks, and whether it helps build the atmosphere on the night. Normally, I don’t have any videos of my lighting in action because even though I can take a decent picture, I am terrible at filming. However, a few weeks ago I was sent a video of a party I performed at in January and even though it is shakey mobile phone footage, it does give you a taster of how my lighting can complement your event – in this case, a lot of the guests went to Ibiza during the summer and wanted to recreate the amazing nights that they had there. Needless to say, mission accomplished!
Putting on an epic show is what I love to do, and the lightshow plays a part in that. Combining the visuals that will make you and your guests go “Wow!” with the sound that is crisp, clear and punchy whilst having a performance that is not only polished but is tailored to you and your guests’ creates a night that you will talk about for years to come.
