When Kate & James first spoke to me about being their Wedding DJ at Shustoke Barn, they were very keen to get across the fact that they would love an Ibiza vibe for their wedding. Now, I have been known to rock a Balearic-style party in Warwickshire from time to time, and being able to do that at a venue that I have a whole lot of love for makes it even better.
I have to say that this DJ must doff his proverbial cap to Kate & James for rounding up a group of vendors who all wonderfully complemented the newlywed’s vision of their big day. First of all, there is Shustoke Barn – an 18th century red-brick barn that really is the epitome of the Cripps & Co family of venues. The team there have really nailed down that envious balance of being chilled enough to let things flow naturally, but not inattentive enough to allow the day to run away with itself. I am proud of my long association with Shustoke Barn, and I still maintain that venue was built with my setup in mind (despite it being built several hundred years before I arrived on the planet, which you have to agree is amazing foresight!).
When they booked me, Kate & James mentioned that they love the idea of having a Saxophonist to help enhance those Ibiza vibes. Having been around the block a few times, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some top-notch Sax Players and having pointed Kate and James in the direction of some of my favourites, they went ahead and booked Sarah Sax.
Boom! Happy days for me!
Sarah has had the pleasure of being able to travel the world doing what she does best. From Warwickshire to Ibiza, weddings to festivals, Sarah always brings her A-game to make sure that every event that she is performing at gets that extra wow factor. Needless to say, I really do enjoy working with Sarah, and I occasionally find myself being in awe of the voodoo that she does so well while she adds a bit of class to my DJ’ing. I also love it when I do something jazzy enough to make her stop, look at me and scream “OH YEAH!”
For such an amazing wedding at Shustoke Barn, there needs to be someone there to document the day as it unfolds. Firstly, we have the incredibly talented Luke Houghton in charge of all things video. I'd never had the pleasure of working with Luke before Kate & James's wedding, but that certainly did not matter. Within moments of meeting the man, I could instantly tell that not only does Luke know what he is doing, but he is as chilled and laid back as anyone that I have ever met - definitely a fit perfect for this wedding. You can check out Luke's video of Kate & James's wedding by clicking here.
Along with video, we also had photos and continuing with the ‘We Love Ibiza’ vibe, the official wedding photographer for Kate & James’s big day was none other than Darren Gair.
That’s right: the man that we lovingly refer to as Dario G has – once again - appeared on this blog.
Regular stalkers of my website will know that Darren is highly thought of here at Chez Smyth, but what you don’t know is why Darren was the perfect photographer for Kate & James’s wedding. On the face of it, Darren is an upstanding family man – he bats well above his average being married to a woman who is ten times more intelligent than I’ll ever be, and they are both proud parents to two wonderful children. Darren also knows how to enjoy a damn good party, and with him taking a yearly pilgrimage to the White Isle for at least as long as I’ve known him, Darren had high expectations of Kate, James and all of their guests bringing the noise!
And OMG, Kate, James & Co. really did bring that noise! From the first dance of Higher Love by Kygo & Whitney Houston, this lot rocked Shustoke Barn. Of course, I made sure that there was enough variety throughout the night so that everybody got to dance to something that they would enjoy, but nobody can deny the fact that the overriding vibe of the night was exactly what Kate & James wanted: Ibiza, baby! It was a party to remember, and I’m sure that you agree that Darren’s photos really convey how much fun everybody had.
Do you love the photos? Yeah, I know that is a silly question, because of course you do! Check out Darren’s wedding photography website by clicking here.
A mix of the right ingredients really does make a Warwickshire wedding party, and it cannot be over-emphasised how well Kate & James nailed their planning. To start with, you have the perfect setting for a wedding party in Shustoke Barn.
Add to that an award-winning DJ who knows how to make sure that everyone gets to hear something that they love, but also ensures that he puts your stamp on the night so that it’s not just a generic party.
Sprinkle in a bit of class and a lot of wow from a fellow finalist of The English Wedding Awards 2023 in Sarah Sax, and make sure that there is some evidence of the incredibly dodgy dancing, not only from a top-notch videographer like Luke Houghton, but also from one of the Midlands’ finest photographers and Balearic island connoisseur, Darren Gair.
Most importantly, these newlyweds invited an incredible bunch of friends and family who know how to have a good time. I’ll say it again: Kate & James, I doff my proverbial cap to you, because you all played an absolue blinder.
