One of the things that I’ve learned in the near 20 years that I have been a DJ is that the typical Wedding DJ does not like change. They know what they know, and they stay within their comfort zone. This is why a lot of my clients use the word ‘overplayed’ when I meet up with them and they talk about their previous experiences of going to an event that has a Mobile Disco. Now, I can see and appreciate both sides of the argument here – couples about to be wed may not want to hear the songs that they have heard every single time that they’ve been to a Birthday Party or Wedding but on the flip side, a DJ will tell you that the reason certain songs are played so often is because they just work. I look at it like this: there is a small but significant difference between playing a song because it works and relying on a song because it works.
But it’s not just music where the typical Mobile DJ doesn’t like change. They also get very comfortable in their surroundings. I myself have a fantastic relationship with many stunning venues that I work with regularly and I’m even the preferred supplier for DJ Entertainment for some of them, but even though I love going back to those venues regularly and working with the teams that I have built such a good rapport with, I also love working somewhere new. Especially if that venue is brand new in itself. Luckily for me, Ella & Dan gave me a chance to rock their dancefloor at Barns & Yard in Worcestershire.
Barns & Yard at Hanley Hall is a luxury Tudor barn venue that has been renovated to an incredibly high standard by a passionate team. I started following their progress on Instagram towards the tail end of last year and to see the fruits of their labour really is a credit to Lisi, Kate and Co. When I had a call from Dan in March telling me that Darren Gair recommended me, I jumped at the chance to be their Wedding DJ because I know how good I could make a party at Barns & Yard look and sound.
I met up with Ella & Dan at Barns & Yard so I could get a feel for them and for the venue. Ella & Dan are an amazingly relaxed young couple who smiled the entire time that we spoke. I got to learn a little bit about them and also about the music that they love to dance to. There were mentions of Sean Paul, Gyptian, Serani, Justin Timberlake, Rhianna, Noughties Indie, Tinie Tempah and One Direction. The newlyweds-to-be also wanted to ensure that there was variety on the night so that their guests could also dance to something that they would enjoy too. Except for Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift was on the banned list. Sorry, Tay Tay.
The night itself was a lot of fun. Guests enjoyed dancing to the songs that Ella & Dan love as well as the tunes that they enjoy. Songs across the board from Reggae, to Motown, to Soul, to 80s, to Pop, to RnB and so much more were played on this night and it was great to see their feet on the dancefloor and smiles on their faces. With Laura from Studio 81 Weddings & Events on hand to ensure that the day ran smoothly and Darren Gair taking what I know will be some epic photos of the big day, Ella & Dan’s wedding was a joy to perform at. You’d have never guessed that this was one of the first weddings being held at Barns & Yard!
As you can see from the pictures I took, the setup that we used for Barns & Yard at Hanley Hall works stunningly well. The neutral coloured walls are perfect to paint with colour using my wash lighting, along with my moving head profiles and to top that off, the Threshing Barn is acoustically brilliant. Throw in a good bunch of people who love to have a great time and Barns & Yard turns from an elegant and luxury Wedding Venue by day to a Nightclub at night. When I say that I’m not a typical Wedding DJ, I really do mean it!
Perfect days deserve incredible nights and if you book me as your Wedding DJ, I’ll work with you to ensure that your night is tailored to you and your guests. Then, on the night itself, I’ll bring a lightshow and sound system that perfectly complements your venue to help create an atmosphere for a great night.
