I’ve no idea how it’s happened, but this year has seen me travel further afield more often than before. For example, Dani & Callum booked me about 12 months before they were due to wed as their Professional All-Day Wedding Host and DJ after a recommendation from Dani’s brother who saw me perform at a wedding. The location? Papplewick Pumping Station in Nottingham – a bit of a drive from Worcestershire, I’ll admit, but certainly worth it.
Set in tranquil countryside, Papplewick Pumping Station is a really cool place to hold your wedding. The Victorian Engineering is there for all to see, and it is certainly something that’s a little bit different from the norm. Dani & Callum had organised everything themselves, including a marquee, bar, catering, seating, dancefloor…the list goes on and to see it all set up so fantastically well and ready for the day is a credit to the happy couple!
Along with my hosting role for the day, where I was on hand to make the introductions, key announcements, act as a guide for the guests as well as liaise with the venue staff and other suppliers was to provide a bespoke playlist for the drinks reception and the wedding breakfast, I also had the pleasure of turning the volume up to 11 in the evening and spin some great the tunes into the night. Obviously, the full sound system at one end of the marquee would have been a bit overkill for the daytime, so I set up a couple of small speakers around the tables, helping me keep the volume at ‘polite background’ while Mr. & Mrs. Powell and their guests ate and drank. With the speakers being closer to the seating area, it also helped with the speeches via wireless mics.
With the day complete, I moved back behind the DJ Booth, cranked up the volume and got the party started! Music ranged from Motown, to Soul, to Pop but the biggest flavour of the night was Rock & Indie – something that I knew would be the case, as I meet up with all my clients before their big days to chat about what they like. Having met Dani & Callum (and one of their dogs!) at a bar near their home, I managed to get a feel for what they like and when we rounded off the last hour with a huge slice of Pop Punk, hands were in the air and there was plenty of singing to go along with it.
