Booking Your Wedding DJ
A few weeks ago, I had an enquiry come through for a wedding in 2019. Nothing unusual about that in itself, but I’m not available for this particular date for one simple reason – it is the same day that I’m getting married!
Luckily, since I have been in the industry for nearly 18 years, I have worked with a number of top quality DJs, and have hand selected a small group who I would happily recommend to any potential client were I not be available for their event, and this is exactly what I did on this occasion, but the conversation continued between myself and the bride to be, and it all started with one simple question: “So who does a wedding DJ book for his wedding?”
If you perform a search on Google for tips on how to book your wedding entertainment, you’ll see that there are a lot of results and quite a bit of good advice. You’ll also see posts on forums from couples who are either going through their wedding planning or who have just had their wedding and are sharing their experiences.
It’s because there is so much information out there that I’m not going to follow suit with this post. I should imagine that by the time you’ve got here, you’ve already studied up on a thousand different questions to ask your wedding DJ and what to look out for on their websites. The advice I’m going to give you is, in my opinion, the most important thing to consider and something that is oddly missing from all the other posts that I’ve seen:
Book somebody you ‘click’ with.
At your wedding, you will have no doubt invited family, friends, and maybe a selected few work colleagues. They are all people who know who you are, know how you tick, and who you have a rapport with, and because of that, you can be relaxed and you can enjoy yourself more.
You didn’t invite Nigel who you see on the train every morning on the way to work. We all know Nigel is a nice guy to say hello to, and maybe even a short chat about the weather, but that doesn’t mean that you want him at your wedding. It’ll be a bit awkward for him and you because you still haven’t entered basic ‘banter’ territory, and that’s exactly what it would be like if you book a wedding DJ – or any supplier – who doesn’t ‘get’ you.
Imagine not having that rapport with your photographer while they are awkwardly trying to take those posed shots of you both. For our wedding, we’ve booked Darren Gair for two very good reasons: firstly, he’s an amazing photographer and, just as importantly, he ‘gets’ us. He knows what kind of people we are, and we have a lot of fun working together.
Now imagine your wedding DJ if they are on a different wavelength to you. It’s in that situation where you could end up with ‘generic mobile disco’ music instead of a tailored night to make it your wedding, not just a wedding. The lighting may look fantastic and the sound could be absolutely spot on, but the production values won’t matter if your DJ is playing music that you and your guests aren’t really in to.
The best thing is that booking the right DJ is actually a lot easier to do than what you may have heard or read. Check out the websites and find a DJ that you like the look of and drop them a message with your questions. If you like what the DJ has to say for themselves, they tick all your boxes, and you feel that you can get along with them whilst working together on your wedding entertainment, then that’s a great start.
You can go ahead and book from there but don’t be afraid to ask to have a chat with them on the phone. It’s here where you’ll really get a feel for them and if you like what you’ve read and like what you’ve heard, then you’ll be much happier booking a DJ who you have clicked with.
