Anna & John's Wedding DJ at Stanbrook Abbey Hotel

The sunshine is officially back! On what has proven to be the hottest day of 2019 thus far (a day very reminiscent of the summer of 2018), I was at Stanbrook Abbey as Anna & John’s Wedding DJ and it was so hot and sweaty that I managed to soak through two polo shirts. If you’re trying to imagine that, think less ‘Diet Coke Break’ and more ‘Panda Cola Break’.

I had an email last April from Anna’s Mom asking how I could help give her daughter’s perfect day the incredible night that it deserves. It seems like what I had to say resonated well as I had a call a few days later from Anna and after chatting for a few minutes, this Bride-to-be decided that I was the right man to rock that dancefloor.

What I learned about Anna and John from that phone call and in the weeks leading up to their big day was how relaxed they both are, but at the same time I also got a sense that they do love a good party! Noughties RnB was mentioned a few times – in fact, Noughties music in general – but with a bit more focus on the RnB and Dance music of that decade, I knew this was going to be less of a ‘Mobile Disco’ and more of a ‘Mobile Nightclub’.

Stanbrook Abbey is a stunning Worcester wedding venue nestled in the Malvern Hills and St. Anne’s Hall was the room where we partied and where legends were made! By the time we were due to start, the temperature had actually dropped to a level where it was nice and comfortable to sit outside for the first time that day (it did peak at 35 degrees earlier in the afternoon!). With games out on the gardens such as crazy golf and football, plenty of places to sit and with the bar officially open, guests wanted to relax and enjoy the weather and Anna & John asked if I minded if we push things back a bit so they can make the most of what they were doing – having fun and spending time with their guests.

Now this is where you will see how different DJs approach this. I saw on Social Media various posts from DJs bemoaning the good weather and how their dancefloors were empty because everyone was outside drinking Pimms, Gin and cold Ciders (I’m sure that other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were also available). My answer to my newlywed’s question was a different mentality – “Let me see what I can do to add to the atmosphere out here.” After getting the OK from the manager on duty that night, I popped a speaker out onto the terrace and played some chilled tunes, Tropical House and some stuff you would hear in a Balearic Lounge and I did that for one simple reason – it complemented perfectly with what Anna, John and all of their friends and family wanted to do. I could have gone against the grain and insisted on dragging everyone in to do the first dance on time, but I also knew that as soon as that was done, everybody would go back outside again. This party was destined to give me a full dancefloor and as long as people are enjoying themselves now, I was happy to wait a little bit longer for that to happen.

A couple of hours later, everyone was sufficiently chilled and chomping at the bit to get the party started. As soon as the first dance was complete, guests piled onto that dancefloor like it was the only place in the room that had oxygen! With tunes from Calvin Harris, Nelly, Coolio, Avicii, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Martin Solveig, Loud Luxury, Meduza, Usher and so much more, this wedding reception will go down in Stanbrook Abbey history as one of the best parties that St. Anne’s Hall has ever seen! There was table dancing, shots, colourful wigs, shots and some epic dancing skills. And shots. Lots and lots of shots. I may have even joined in on a couple of those shots.

I’m glad that I took the picture taking machine with me to get some snaps, as well as using my Samsung to get that bit of shaky mobile phone footage that I posted on Social Media the other day. Anna, John and Co. were a joy to perform for and I’m sure that the memories of their wedding day and night will live on forever.
