From the moment Kerry & Darren booked me as their Professional Wedding DJ at Highbury Hall, I had a feeling that this one was going to be special. Of course, all weddings are special but when Kerry told me during our initial exchange of emails that her and Darren have four children between them and that they were determined to get a dance together, sing and generally have fun with their family and friends, I could just tell that this was going to be a little more special.
Our setting for this perfect day was none other than Highbury Hall in Birmingham – a Grade II listed building built in the 1800s not too far away from the city centre (I promise that is the start and the end of the history lesson!). The room we rig for is small and intimate, but the venue as a whole can certainly cater for a sizable guest list with several rooms scattered around, so some guests can relax and chat away from the hustle and bustle of the room where everybody else was partying!
Outside, there is beautiful scenery that I imagine is a photographer’s dream and I know for a fact that Darren Gair from The Last Of The Light would have taken full advantage of the surroundings, making sure that Kerry & Darren have some amazing photos of their big day.
As it was such a nice day [side note: RIP Summer 2018 – you were epic!], I started the night off with soulful remixes of contemporary tunes to match the relaxed nature of everyone in attendance and complementing the sunshine outside. After the first dance, we went into full on party mode going from Soul & Motown, to Indie, throwing in lots of 90s as well as a couple of sets of classic dance anthems! There was one moment at the start of my first set of dance anthems where the bride’s face lit up – it was my favourite moment of the night and just goes to show that having a creative flair when DJing and not just ‘pressing play’ really makes the difference. I’m really glad that I took the camera with me, so I could capture some of those epic dance moves!
I had a lot of fun providing a Wedding DJ service at Highbury Hall that is a lot more than just a typical ‘mobile disco’. Working at such a nice venue with one of my favourite photographers and performing for a great bunch who really know how to have fun ensured that Kerry and Darren’s perfect day got the incredible night that it deserved.
