Sometimes, things don’t quite go how you would expect at a wedding reception. Obviously, there’s always that variety of tunes to ensure all in attendance get to hear something that they would enjoy. Then, of course, I make sure that the happy couple get a night that is tailored to them and their guests, and not just a generic mobile disco. Sometimes though…well, let’s look at when I was Emily & Glenn’s Wedding DJ at Wootton Park.
Wootton Park is a stunning exclusive use venue set in it’s own valley of Warwickshire countryside. For quite a while now, Wootton Park has been one of my regular venues, and it’s always a joy to rock up and have a damn good party!
So what of Emily & Glenn’s wedding? Well, these guys were a lot of fun and, as it turns out, so were their friends and family. The evening’s festivities kicked off with their first dance of Kodaline’s ‘The One’ before Emily took centre stage with her Dad for the father and daughter dance.
Once the formalities were out of the way, Wootton Park’s dance floor opened up for a storming night. From pop to reggae, dad rock to disco and even a bit of soul added in for good measure, the guests at this wedding wanted to make sure that Emily & Glenn had the incredible night that their perfect day deserved.
However, nothing that I have mentioned thus far was the highlight of the night. Whilst having a chat with the newlyweds-to-be a few weeks before the big day, Glenn told me that he does love DnB. The problem was that he was very conscious that it may not be appropriate for a wedding.
This kind of reluctance is something that I come across very often: “I like this, but you really can’t play that at a wedding.” When I hear that, I always tell my clients that my job as your Wedding DJ is to entertain, not to educate, so I will not go to a place that is going to alienate a large portion of your guests.
Saying that, it doesn’t mean that I won’t try. I am the kind of guy who loves to push boundaries, and I do that by starting with well known, commercial tunes. If everyone’s loving it, I take it that little bit further. As long as I have a rocking dance floor filled with people who are willing, I’ll keep heading that way, but I will never go so far that I’ve ended up leaving everyone behind. The party goes where you all want to take it in that moment.
Turns out that Glenn had nothing to worry about. DnB was the absolute highlight of the night, and the dance floor revealed that there were quite a few ravers in attendance! Apparently nobody told this lot that it was a Wednesday night, and that they were expected to be in work the next day!
Emily & Glenn’s wedding at Wootton Park was the first time that I had the chance to work with Craig McKenna. Craig is an incredibly talented wedding videographer but, more importantly, he is an absolute top bloke. We had a good laugh working together, and it was a shame that he had to go home before he turned into a pumpkin (in his defense, he had been working all day!). Craig was kind enough to let me use some of his footage for this Blog – I did butcher it a bit so I can just have the dance floor stuff so when you watch it, keep in mind that Craig expertly shot it, but it was I who amateurishly edited it.
